Your syllable pattern will appear here.

Counts follow standard American English pronunciation. Some words (like “fire”, “every” or “poem”) can be said with one more or one fewer syllable, so read your lines aloud too.

How to Use the Poem Syllable Counter

  1. Paste your poem with each line on its own row. Leave an empty line between stanzas.
  2. Read the count for each line on the left. Small blue numbers show the syllables in every word.
  3. Check the pattern box. It shows your syllable pattern (for example 8-8-8-8) and names the form if your poem matches one.
  4. Adjust uneven lines by swapping a word for a shorter or longer one, then watch the count update.

Syllables and Meter

Meter is the beat pattern of a line: which syllables are stressed and which are not. Counting syllables is the first step. A line of iambic pentameter, the meter of Shakespeare’s sonnets, has five pairs of unstressed and stressed syllables, so it usually has 10 syllables:

i WALKED / a LONG / the SHORE / at BREAK / of DAY (10 syllables)

  • Tetrameter (4 beats): about 8 syllables per line.
  • Pentameter (5 beats): about 10 syllables per line.
  • Hexameter (6 beats): about 12 syllables per line.

A syllable counter tells you how long a line is, but not where the stress falls, so read your lines aloud to check the rhythm.

Tips for Even Lines

  • Swap synonyms: “quick” (1) vs. “rapid” (2) vs. “immediate” (4).
  • Add or drop small words like “the”, “a”, “and” or “so”.
  • Use contractions: “do not” (2) becomes “don’t” (1).
  • Find words by length in our lists of one, two and three syllable words.

Poem Syllable Counter FAQ

How do I count the syllables in each line of a poem?

Paste the poem into the box above with one line per row. The tool counts every line separately and shows the total next to it.

How many syllables should a line of poetry have?

There is no single rule. Free verse has no fixed count, while forms like the haiku (5-7-5) or the sonnet (about 10 per line) have set patterns.

Can it check iambic pentameter?

It checks the length: a line of iambic pentameter usually has 10 syllables, and the tool will flag a 14-line poem of 9 to 11 syllables per line as a sonnet shape. It does not mark stressed syllables, so read the lines aloud to check the beat.

Is my poem saved anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser, and your text is not stored or sent anywhere.
